I have to admit, Arnel Pineda’s Don’t Stop Believin’ is one of my favorite version of that song. That I follow all Kim Chui’s telenovelas (from My Girl to Ikaw Lamang), and that I was also in awe when the first ever Asian skater that competes in the winter Olympics is a Filipino. A young Filipino named Michael Christian Martinez. So aside from the fact that I admire these 3 celebrities, they still have one thing in common: Kim Chiu, Arnel Pineda and Michael Christian Martinez all have Asthma yet they have accomplished so much in their respective fields.
As GSK launched the Search for Winners Against Asthma 2015, Olympic figure skater Michael Christian Martinez, was introduced as the new face of the campaign. Martinez suffered from asthmatic bronchitis when he was just two months old. The cold rink actually helped him and his health improved. His mom was very supportive saying it’s better to spend money on skating than in the hospital as Martinez was hospitalized frequently.
To be honest with you, Asthma is very new to me. All I know is, if someone is suffering from Asthma, they should’t be doing tedious jobs (like skating, hello?!?). From what I have seen or heard, Asthma is a high risk disease. Malay ko ba? Ang alam ko lang pag may asthma, nahihirapan silang huminga.. at pwede nilang ikamatay iyon.
Here are some of the things I have learned about Asthma:
- Asthma is a lung disease that affects the airways (See image above)
- Your chances of developing Asthma is higher if you have a blood relative that has asthma
- There is no cure for Asthma and it can kill.
- The good thing is ASTHMA IS MANAGEABLE.
So totoo nga, pag may asthma attack (based on the image above), nahihirapan sila huminga due to narrowed airway. Pero hindi totoo na pag may asthma eh they can’t do tedious jobs… na napatunayan na nila Arnel Pineda, Kim Chui at Michael Christian Martinez. And that’s what Winners Against Asthma campaign is all about. Para ipaalam sa ating lahat, lalong lalo na sa mga taong may asthma o may kapamilya na may asthma, na hindi dapat maging hadlang ang Asthma upang matupad ang mga pangarap sa buhay.
Imagine ha, here in our country, there are over 10 million cases of people with asthma. It remains to be the most common chronic disease of childhood morbidity as measured by school absences, emergency visits and hospitalizations. And despite the availability of treatment guidelines and medicines for the treatment and management of asthma, only 1% of children with Asthma are well controlled (according to AIRAP study).
Yes, Asthma is a serious condition but it can be controlled
And if you have won against asthma, here is something for you:
