Taking care of the elderly is incredibly important, but it can also be difficult for those who do not have any experience in this field. If you are trying to watch over someone that you love while they live in a retirement community, you may want to use the following tips. You can also ask the professionals at the community to do some of the jobs for you, as they will be trained and certified to do so.
Takes Notes About Everything
Whenever you do something, you may want to make a note of it so that you know it was completed for the day. Elderly people often have difficultly remembering things that become routine, such as eating dinner. If you take your grandmother to dinner, for example, note it for the next person who is coming to visit so that they do not also take her to get something to eat. She may not stop them if they do.
Divide Pills Up By Day
Along similar lines, you want to get a pill box that has seven compartments, one for each day. On the first day of the week, fill all of the compartments with the pills that will be needed for that week. This way, you always know what ones were taken and what ones were not. If you do not do this, there is the chance that you could forget and give out two dosages or that you could not give out any at all.
Always Be Patient
One of the hardest things about taking care of the elderly is that they may not want your help. They are used to being independent all of the time. You need to be patient with them when they are trying to keep you from doing the things that you know that you need to do. Remember that it is a difficult emotional time for them, and getting mad at them is not going to help at all.
Do Not Try to Do Too Much
At the same time, you need to remember not to try to do too much. There are things that may be too hard for you. When you run into these things, talk to the staff. They will be glad to help you out. They are there to give you any assistance. If you want to learn more, feel free to check out a site like stivesgroup.com.au.

November 5, 2013 at 7:44 amtaking care of the elderly is really not easy. when my Lola got sick, and she lives in Bohol, my mom has to go to Bohol just to take care of her. My mom leave us here in Bukidnon just to take care of her mom. I know how hard it was because everyday my MOm would call us and tell us everything that happened that day.

November 5, 2013 at 10:18 pmIt really takes a lot of patience to care for the elderly; they can really be stubborn at times and sensitive, not to mention forgetful, but if we really love our old folks, then taking care of them is not a burden at all. It becomes a labor of love instead.
