Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you!
one more time!
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you!
So who’s birthday is it again? none! hahaha well this is a birthday where instead of blowing a candle, we’re blowing away germs!
In one of their books, in was mentioned that ins hand washing, one should clean the happy birthday song twice, to make sure the hands were cleaned thoroughly. Ever since they learned about that, they been singing the HBD song every time they wash their hands. It was also mentioned when we should wash our hands:
Wash hands before eating and after eating.
Wash hands after handling garbage.
Wash hands after playing.
Wash hands after touching animals.
Wash hands after using the bathroom.
How important is hand washing? It prevents the transfer of germs from one person to another. And by hand washing we can help stop the spread of diseases!
Now, let’s move on to proper brushing of teeth. In a morning show from a local channel, I heard that brushing should be at least 2 minutes. How can we track that two minutes? Use a timer perhaps? err hassle! How about the HBD song? Good idea, don’t you think? Well, the HBD song is about 10-15 seconds.. so a 2 minute brushing should be 12x HBD song.. ay ang dami! hahaha
From the same morning show, the proper brushing technique was also demonstrated:
- Brush the outer of surface of your teeth in circular motion.
- Brush the inner surface of your teeth in push and pull motion.
- Brush the chewing surface of your teeth in push and pull motion.
- Brush your tongue.
For a two minute brushing, here is my suggestion:
- Brush the outer surface of your teeth singing Happy Birthday (one for front, one for left side and one for right side)
- Brush the inner surface of your teeth singing HBD song (twice on the lower surface and twice for the upper)
- Brush the chewing surface of your teeth singing the HBD song (one from each: lower right side, upper right side, lower left side, upper left side)
- Brush your tongue with one HBD song.
Kinda confusing at first but after sometime, your kids will get used to it.
So what’s the importance of brushing the tongue? This is done so as to remove the bacteria in our tongue that may cause bad breathe. Aside from tongue brushing, we also use mouthwash to prevent bad breath. We use Swish Mouthwash because it is alcohol free, perfect product for the kids.
Here’s an info from Swish Mouthwash Facebook Page:
SWISH is an ALCOHOL-FREE oral care brand. It has SureFresh that helps fight bad breath, plaque and gingivitis for long-lasting fresh breath. It comes in four refreshing and exciting flavors: Peppermint Fresh, Arctic Chill, Cinnamon Blast, Mangosteen Mint and Icy Choco Mint.
Since it is alcohol-free, it is safe and healthy. Even diabetics, children above 6 years old and even pregnant women can enjoy Swish alcohol-free mouthwash.
Our favorite is Swish Mouthwash in Arctic Chill.

July 11, 2013 at 8:58 pmthis is very informative marce…i used to sing the Pambansang Awit while washing hands bec. it was suggested before that the length of time required to wash hands coincide with singing the national anthem..i guess it’s easier for me to just sing the HB song twice:) thank you, you made it easier for me. I also learned from my son 8 steps of the proper handwashing bec. it was implemented in school and they also have a song for it in Thai. As for brushing teeth, I’m guilty of not reaching 2 minutes! I’m always in a hurry! I better see to it that I reached 2 minutes while following your suggestion:) Thank you marce:)

July 12, 2013 at 2:14 pmI haven’t tried swish mouthwash yet as I’m still using another brand but I think will give this a try. I remember back when we were in college we were asked to sing the HBD song when we do our return demo for hand washing!

July 13, 2013 at 9:37 amIt’s really important for us moms to guide our kids on how to properly brush their teeth. They will thank us for it when they’re all grown up because a good set of teeth makes one look prettier/handsomer.
