When it comes to being green, you can always count on me on that.. now it is up to you what kind of green that would be..
So for Mommy Moments this week, as expected, my Earth Friendly Tip is to use your own eco bag. Never rely on PLASTICS, they won;t do you any good. For a time they maybe very helpful to you but there will come a time that all the plastics you used will get back at you. Remember what happened in Baguio City just a few days ago? When the landfill collapsed? What did you noticed? don’t tell me you didn’t? Oh well, if you really didn’t noticed what the mountain of garbage is made of, it’s mostly plastic! If only those people used their own bag instead of plastic bags, landfills will not be like that..
But really, how much plastics can we save? do you want me to do the math?
In one wet supermarket trip, we usually end up with more than 20 plastics. That comes from buying 5-8 kinds of meat where in each meat was placed in 2 plastic bags then placed in two big plastic bags. That would be 12 plastic bags if we buy 5 kinds of meat, same goes with sea food and beef. When it comes vegetables such as garlic, onion or the likes, they also put this in small plastic bags then again put in a bigger bags. That would be more than 5 bags for vegetables and same goes with fruits. We usually go to wet supermarket every two weeks, so in a month if don’t bring our own bag, that’s 40 plastic bags or more.. which all goes to waste then to landfills. We can reuse it right? but then again, in the end it still goes to the landfill.
Start bringing your bags now and help save the planet. It’s not that easy I know but when you get used to it, you will thank yourself for bringing a greener place for your kids.

September 9, 2011 at 7:28 pmhey I agree to that and special thanks to some malls and supermarkets in promoting ecobags, by using it you can have extra points on their mall cards from 2 points equavalent to 2 pesos, such a nice idea..I just hope even wet and dry markets can promote the “no to plastic” policy.

September 9, 2011 at 10:39 pmI am so proud of myself because I have been using the SM supermarket eco bag for a month now every time I do our grocery shopping, and I even used it when I went to the wet market alone for the first time ever last week.. 😀
I will continue to use my eco bag and help the environment.. 🙂
So sad about what happened here in Baguio and yes, I noticed that most of the garbage were plastic bags. I was told by someone who lived close to the place that the stink of the garbage is worse now more than ever, there’s no way to get rid of all that garbage and there is no where to put it.. if only more people used eco bags…

September 10, 2011 at 12:04 amThe government should do more in informing the people on how important it is to not use plastic. Some people are just clueless about saving the environment.

September 11, 2011 at 2:22 pmHi Mommy Pehpot!
Do you know that there are now municipalities in Metro Manila that absolutely ban the use of plastics in malls, groceries and supermarkets, like in Alabang? More municipalities should follow, don’t you think?
Dropping by via Mommy Moments. Hope you could check out my MM entry, too – http://www.anaturalmama.com/2011/09/teach-green-my-earth-friendly-tips.html. Thanks! – Tess

September 14, 2011 at 2:44 pmI agree what we should only use plastics when we really need to. We only hesitate because it will be harder for us but we should think about kids and their future and that in itself is worth sacrificing plastics for.

September 14, 2011 at 4:11 pmfor the first few weeks, it really is hard to shy away from plastic use but as you go along it becomes part of your life already 🙂

September 14, 2011 at 4:30 pmIt will be especially hard for me because I use the plastics as trash bags but I guess I need to find other ways to dispose of my trash now which is good in a way like for food, we need to make sure we eat all of it so we don’t throw anything away, or maybe start composting 😀

March 4, 2012 at 11:58 pmI was really annoyed with so many plastic bags being offered for free in the local supermarkets where I live. Luckily, a new regulation forced them to shift to biodegradable plastic bags, so, now the future looks a bit brighter.
