Tubal ligation (also commonly referred to as having your tubes tied) is surgery that closes off a woman’s fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes help carry a released egg from the ovaries to the uterus and are usually the place where an egg is fertilized by a sperm. Once the tubes are closed or “tied,” sperm will not be able to reach an egg, so pregnancy cannot take place. (source)
Here is an illustration of how Tubal Ligation works… this is far better off than describing it in words.
Tubal Ligation is a permanent kind of birth control. It is one of the most effective as it permanently make a woman sterile. In some cases this procedure can be reversed. The chances of getting pregnant again after reversal is very slim and there is always a risk of ectopic pregnancy.
According to my OB Gyne, the procedure won’t hurt, it will be the recovery that will give me some aches. I will be having tubal ligation after giving birth to my Sati. My OB says it will be more painful since I will still have some contractions days after birth and my fallopian tube is healing from the procedure. I hope I can tolerate the pain..

September 3, 2009 at 9:06 pmDon't do it!!! If you're sure you're done having children, go for a partial hysterectomy. That is where they take the uterus and leave the ovaries. This way, you'll no longer have a period and yet you won't have to go on hormone replacement therapy. The recovery time, if done after a birth is nearly the same, without all the hideousness of the post-birth period that lasts for like two weeks. If I had known then what I know now, I'd have done this. My period has been excessively heavy as well as longer than EVER since I got this done after the birth of my son. I'm more miserable physically every single month. If I could turn back time, knowing that I'm absolutely done having children, I would have opted for a partial instead of a tubal ligation Any Day of the Week! Don't repeat my mistake if you're sure you're finished having kids.
