My two boys are now both in pre school. My first born is in prep or kinder 2 as some schools called it, anyway it is the level before Grade 1. My second born is in nursery. I don’t have any picture of my first born since this is almost his first formal education. Last year I enrolled him in a school near us (a school run by nuns) and it turns out bad. During his first few weeks, I observed that my son was really bored and is not learning something new. It’s my fault that I did not inquired and asked first on how advance or late they are in terms of academics. We thought that since it is run by nuns and the tuition is bit high, it’s a good one (aside from the fact that they have a nice play ground). So the school days goes on with my son complaining how they would just “color” and do nothing. I called them and inquired if they can transfer my kid to a higher level because (he was kinder then so I asked them if then accelerate him to prep). What they told me is they have the materials for acceleration and that if I want, I can just go to DECS and work it by myself. I was really mad at them, for that, granted they did not have the materials for that, they should have offer some help or so. So I pulled out my kid and decided to juts home school him. I think he can learn more form than that school who does not even know the word professionalism. The next moved they made is really unacceptable. So my kids are not in their class anymore, and it took them a month to notice that! What the!?! Yes he was absent for like a month before they called me. And so when they called me, they were like, we are sorry we cannot give you a refund because of this and that and that according to them, the down payment I paid is enough to cover the tuition fee during the time my kid is attending their school and during the time he was absent. OK, I was like oh go on, you can have that money all you want but I won’t waste another cent on that stupid school.
I am sharing this to you so you can learn from it. During our school hunt we did not set our standards straight. According to my teacher friend, we should be more vigilant in asking about our concerns. She says that in her teaching experience, some parents are contented that a school has a clean canteen, that a school has a good play ground. She says that our main concern always should be the kind of education our kids get and of course how it fits on the budget.
So this is my second child, Mico, one morning before going to school we decide to have a pictorial.lol. He is quite late when it comes to speech. He is four now and yet he is still not good on words. He is as naughty as his kuya and is as playful too. He is also as inquisitive and objective as his kuya, but he just cannot express it yet. Like yesterday, my husband gave them crunchy bars and he asked what is the beginning letter of his treats. He answered C (bulol way) and asked how it sounds.. he says.. MEOW..MEOW..MEOW

June 26, 2009 at 3:03 amHe's so cute! There are kids really who are late in speech. Perhaps, when he reaches 4.5 years old you can have him checked by a speech therapy. I have friends who do that and now their kids can't stop talking. =)

June 26, 2009 at 6:25 amI had the same dilemma when I my kid entered his first year in school and that made me learn my lessons well. Ngayon sobrang kulit ako whenever there is a chance to ask the teachers about how my kid is doing in school, I always take the opportunity.
