The NIDO FORTIFIED Science Discovery Center held (August 15) the Gala Premier of the Darkstar Adventure, in lieu of the celebration of the International Year of Astronomy. The Darkstar Adventure is the latest planetarium film that touches astronomy on a very childish way. The film involves animated character and a “lost in space” adventure. The film made science more exciting and fun.
We had the chance to watch Darkstar Adventure yesterday (part of my parenting style). At first I was worried that Chico (my one year old) will make a fuss inside the planetarium (so we sat somewhere at the back). I had with me my 6 year old and 4 year old boys (and my first born, hubby).
Darkstar Adventure is a story about Subrah, Sweeps (the robot) and her father. They have been on a dying planet for three years and Subrah was bored, and as she puts it, the sun (the planet’s sun) comes up, her dad measures, the sun comes down, her dad measures. Sweeps on the other hand was more concerned with sweeping and making the place dust free as much as possible. Then it was time to go home. The planet’s sun is about to explode. Due to some events, Subrah and Sweep was left behind. Now they are faced with more adventure than she can imagine. Will Subrah and Sweep survive the blast? Or can they find their own Stargate to escape the blast?
Chico loved it. He loved the effects and the stars and the lights. The movie rating for a one year old? thumbs up. The boys loved it too (even the hubby). All in all, the movie is a great way to help the kids understand the nature of space and stars. The animation of the characters were very apt for the wild imagination of the kids. I guess it was the sound effect that made Chico amazed the whole time. The presentation of scientific facts about space was done in a way that even 6 year olds can understand. I recommend Darkstar Adventure to kids (and kids at heart too) of all ages (yes even 1 year olds). The funniest part was the two boys were delighted that they did not fall asleep (they did when we watched Transformers 2). And yes, that is more than a compliment, coming from kids with short attention span.
